The air is getting a bit cooler and the college students have arrived… fall will shortly be upon us in Boston! Just because school has started doesn’t mean that the city stops bustling. In fact, there will be a plethora of fun events for visitors and residents to take part in during the September and October months. We have put together a list of some FREE events happening in the nearby Boston area… including some from our very own The Lawn On D!
So should you be traveling to Boston in the next couple of months… here’s just a few of our suggestions for fall fun:
Country in the City Concert
September 14, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
City Hall Plaza
Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the city of Boston host this second annual (free!) concert at City Hall Plaza. This year’s performer will likely be announced in the next week – last year’s headliner was the Eli Young Band.
Guinness Oysterfest
September 16, 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The Lawn On D Powered by Citizens Bank
Celebrate Half Way to St. Patrick’s Day with $1 local oysters, Guinness, live Irish bands, Celtic dancers, and more!
South Boston Street Festival
September 16, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
East Broadway, between I and L Streets
This annual street festival will feature live entertainment on two stages, dance performances, over 100 local merchants/artists/organizations, children’s activities, and food from local restaurants.
MixFest
September 16, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade
Hosted by Mix 104.1, this free concert at the Hatch Shell will feature Kelly Clarkson, Blondie, and Andy Grammar.
Citizens Bank Community Day
September 23, 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
The Lawn On D Powered by Citizens Bank
A full day of fun activities and exhibits courtesy of Citizens Bank Community Partners, including Zoo New England, Community Servings, Boston Harbor Now, YMCA Greater Boston, Mothers for Justice and Equality, Phoenix Multisport, Pine Street Inn, Museum of Fine Arts, Home for Little Wanderers, Camp Harbor View, and more!
”What the Fluff?” Festival
September 23, 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Union Square, Somerville
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fluff – invented in Somerville’s Union Square in 1917 by Archibald Query. The annual festival draws approximately 15,000 people for a day of musical performances, a cooking contest, Fluff-themed games, activities, fun for all ages, and Fluff treats of every sort.
Kids Really Rock
October 1, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
The Lawn On D Powered by Citizens Bank
Kids Really Rock is a free all-day family festival that brings together the country’s top family bands for a fantastic day of dancing, music and hands-on art activities.
HUBweek

Across Boston + City Hall Plaza
Founded in December 2014 by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, MIT, and Massachusetts General Hospital, HUBweek is a civic collaboration and weeklong festival that brings together the most creative and inventive minds making an impact in art, science, and technology. Explore the future being built in Boston. Events will take place all across the city and City Hall Plaza will transform into “The HUB” – a first-of-its-kind centralized festival site for thousands of artists, innovations, and creators, filled with 60+ shipping containers, dozens of art installations, and 4 geodesic domes.
Head of the Charles Regatta
October 21-22, 2017, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Charles River
Since 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has brought thousands of rowers each year to the Charles River to compete in the largest 2-day regatta in the world. More than 11,000 rowers from around the world will race as 400,000 spectators lining the banks of the Charles River cheer them on.
